James Wilkinson was born in Maryland and served as an officer in the American Revolution. In 1783 he settled in Kentucky, where he engaged in politics, land speculation, and trade. In 1805 he was appointed governor of Upper Louisiana. Thomas Turner, Jr., was born in Lansingburgh, New York, in November 1795, the son of Thomas Turner and Sarah Ketchum. On April 27, 1813, he was commissioned an ensign in the United States Army's 29th Infantry Regiment, and he served in northern New York, Vermont, and Québec throughout the war.
